Graduated in Law by the University of Barcelona and with post-graduated studies at the Center of International Studies (CEI BCN), Maria started her professional career in the European Commission in 1997, in the Directorate-General for Enterprise, in the fields of industrial goods and developing the concept of better regulation.

Later she moved to the Directorate-General for Trade, where she was in charge of bilateral negotiations with third countries on technical regulations and also at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) level. At present, she works in the Directorate-General for Internal Market and Services, where she has been responsible for the establishment of a regulatory framework for the provision of services within the European Union and is currently working in the area of financial services policy and financial markets, in particular on MiFID.
