Mohammed Patel, from Bolton, was jailed on October 21 for four and a half years for a massive insurance fraud stretching over three years involving at least 92 occurrences of staged car collisions. The Insurance Fraud Bureau sees this as the tip of the insurance fraud iceberg, which they suggest adds £44 to every policyholder's annual premium. Although fraud is a growing concern for insurers, the courts have not always taken as strong a line against this crime as insurers would wish.
From 2005 to 2008, Patel, 24, was involved in multiple incidents where he manufactured vehicle collisions and convinced the other drivers that the crash was their fault.
